June 2021 – Wolvertem, Sarens has placed an order for the Spierings battery powered hybrid cranes. The order exist three SK1265-AT6 eLift cranes and one SK597-AT4 eLift. It’s an essential step forward in the future where environmental friendly lifting will be more and more important. Sarens experience an increasing demand for electrical lifting solutions from their customer base, the ‘Zero-emission eLift’ solution of Spierings connects seamlessly to this demand. The Spierings eLift cranes can work electric on full speed and capacity by connecting only a 16A grid connection, that could be found at almost all lifting locations.
Due to the integrated battery pack, peaks in energy consumption can be mediated. When the crane is not being operated for more seconds, the hydraulic pumps will shut off reducing the energy consumption. Meanwhile the battery remains charging making it possible to operate on only a low power grid-connection most often found on construction sites. In the case no grid connection is available at all, the crane can also work in a hybrid mode where a small 3 cylinder Stage 5 diesel engine without AdBlue together with the battery pack will supply the crane with the required power.
Spierings has developed the eLift cranes that can work on a grid connection from only 16 Amps which can be found anywhere making it actually usable. No more dragging with heavy power cables over the construction site. The operator will choose the current he requires to extract from the grid connection within the range of 1 – 32 Amp. When there are other electrical consumers plugged-in the operator can choose for a lower current while, due to the batteries, the crane will still be able to work at 100% capacity and speed.

Installation on the Gammon Hong Kong Airport extension site
The Airport Authority of Hong Kong has awarded a large contract to Gammon for the construction of the third runway facilities at Hong Kong International Airport. The Spierings cranes will be used for the construction of the tunnels and associated works for an automatic people mover and baggage handling system at Hong Kong International Airport on behalf of Airport Authority Hong Kong. This consists of two 1800 meter long eight-cell tunnel structures for the automatic people mover and baggage handling system systems. The tunnels form a major part of the Three Runway System project at the airport and will ultimately allow travelers to move between the new Third Runway Concourse and the expanded Terminal 2
Initially Gammon was considering using rail mounted tower cranes on the project as the lifts required were in various locations on the site. The Spierings cranes can provide the flexibility they require to move from point to point on the site as required in the erected condition or brought down in about 10 minutes to facilitate longer travel or regular maintenance. The technical question raised by the Gammon engineers were answered to their satisfaction enabling them to place the order for the two Spierings cranes.
Spierings provide a very comprehensive training course at their crane factory in Holland for the Alatas crane engineers who will be responsible for looking after the crane during the 5 year contract period. A stock of emergency spare parts is held by Alatas in Hong Kong to minimize the delivery time of any parts required. A regular service contract has also been agreed to ensure the cranes are available for the almost continuous operation they will be required to perform over the whole contract period.

During the last few weeks of 2020, Spierings Mobile Cranes B.V. has been counting down towards the delivery of their first electric eLift Crane. An Innovation that has required 1.5 years of hard work. With this innovation Spierings has delivered the largest electric mobile crane in the world that can work on a 16 Amp socket with zero emissions. A 72 ton heavy crane, 66 meter high with a lift capacity of 10.000kg is able to work on the electrical outlet that could also be used for electric cooking.

Spierings sees a growing demand both inland as abroad. In Scandinavia our customers are asking for electric cranes much longer. Many cranes constructed before 2003 have already been exported to Scandinavia. These cranes are not equipped with a separate crane engine en could also run full electric. Although these cranes needed a heavy grid connection that often was not available on construction sites.

We where directly enthusiastic and have directly ordered the first machine. Meanwhile zero emission construction has become even more important and we expect a high demand for this crane. The possibility to use this crane from 11 Amp makes it possible to work on virtually any construction site without emissions. In 2021 we can add another 2 new eLift models to our fleet”.

On May 22, Spierings Mobile Cranes from Oss delivered its 250th 6-axle to the German customer Wiesbauer. Wiesbauer is one of the first Spierings customers in Germany. At that time Wiesbauer started with the SK477-AT4 and now they have a fleet of Spierings cranes and a new SK1265-AT6 Mighty Tiny.A huge milestone for Spierings, it is now impossible to imagine the crane industry without the SK1265-AT6, with an unrivaled 60-meter flight, a capacity of 1700 kg on the tip and a maximum load of 10 tons, it is an all-rounder. The popular crane can be used in many different areas, both in construction and industry.
With a total weight of 72 tons, the crane carries all its ballast and jibs and thus achieves the maximum capacity. The Wiesbauer machine is equipped with the 10 ton axle load system of which the ballast can be removed so that the crane can drive with a 10 ton axle load and 60 tons in total. A much requested option in Germany making the crane even more versatile and more flexible to use.
Spierings has been producing the machine since 2003 and the crane dimensions or the concept have never really been changed. However, the crane has been further developed. It is made more user-friendly and the engines have been renewed. For example, the superstructure has recently been equipped with a new stage V engine and the undercarriage has been fitted with a new type Euro 6b. The gearbox is the latest type ZF TraXon.
Later this year, Spierings will introduce a hybrid drive system for the upper crane, which means that the SK1265-AT6 & SK597-AT4 can even do its job with a 32 amp grid connection. To make this possible, a 25 kWh lithium battery has been mounted to ensure a continuous low load on the grid while the crane can be used at full capacity and performance level.Thomas Wiesbauer from Wiesbauer: “We are delighted with the 250th SK1265-AT6 from Spierings, it is a reliable crane that can no longer be ignored in our crane park. In 2001 Tiny Spierings died at the age of 47. Together with Leo Spierings they are the founders of Spierings Mobile Cranes in 1987. The Mighty Tiny is a tribute to Tiny, a name that every SK1265-AT6 leaving the factory in Oss proudly wears.

Netherlands-based crane manufacturer Spierings Mobile Cranes has launched the world’s first hybrid mobile crane. Combining zero-emission driving and operational capabilities, the new SK487-AT3 City Boy crane provides a flexible solution for urban environments and could play a key role in alleviating the European nitrogen emission issues.
The launch of the City Boy was attended by representatives from the business community and government, while four Dutch crane manufacturers were presented with their first crane. ‘Hoisting equipment manufacturers and the construction industry have been eagerly looking forward to this moment’, says CEO Koos Spierings.
His company, based in the town of Oss in Brabant province, has already received 60 orders for the new crane to date. Spierings: ‘It shows there’s a substantial demand out there for this type of vehicle, which I would attribute both to how compact and flexible it is – making it highly suited for working in city centers – and to the fact that it is an effective solution to the problem of high nitrogen emissions. This will enable crane rental companies and construction companies to focus completely on what they do best: building.’
‘The Tesla of the building industry’
Another attendee at the Oss launch was George Raessens, the deputy chairman of the trade association for the Dutch construction industry, Bouwend Nederland. Raessens called the launch of the City Boy a milestone for the construction and infrastructure industries, especially in light of the nitrogen emission crisis.
‘We’re on the cusp of a new era, both because we now have a vehicle with zero-emission capabilities – for which there is a huge demand – and because this will inspire the market and the political class to follow suit. You can consider this crane the “Tesla of the building industry.” When the Tesla first launched six years ago it was a technological breakthrough, and now they’ve become a fixture on our roads, being literally everywhere. These cranes are expected to follow a similar trajectory.’

On March 5, Spierings Mobile Cranes hosted the world premiere of the SK487-AT3 City Boy. Halfway January the first City Boy was delivered to crane hire company Nederhoff. Together with the owners of the first 4 City Boy’s we presented this innovative crane to the press and special invitees. The SK487-AT3 is the first crane in the world that can drive and operate fully electric.

Spierings Mobile Cranes recently opened a stunning showroom at which customers will take receipt of their new cranes. Furthermore, work is currently underway on the factory roof to create the largest solar panel park in Oss.
A total of 5390 solar panels are installed in an area covering 9163 m². These panels will ultimately deliver an energy yield of approximately 1,366,365 KWh. This project underlines the commitment of Spierings Mobile Cranes to building an energy-neutral future, and will see the largest solar panel park in Oss established close to the N329 — Oss’s road of the future.

Last Saturday the training for the first City Boy operators took place in Oss. The new user interfaces and working of the crane is explained in theorie and practice.
